Breathe the Divine

A New Zealand lake

Just as you can’t see air, you can’t see the divine. God exists in the air. Through your nose and mouth, air has been constantly coming into your body since the moment you first cried at birth. The first action most of us took when we were born was to expel air out of our lungs, which was expressed as a cry. You need to exhale before you can inhale. When you inhale, God comes to dwell inside your body. Even when you’re sleeping, God enters you, as long as you have life.

God is life, and the source of life. Air is also the source of your life. Can you live without breathing? No matter how much money or power or popularity you had, without being able to breathe, you couldn’t live at all. So standing before God, you have to be humble. And when you breathe, you need to be humble.

God doesn’t come to you because you pray and say, “Please come to me,” or because you pay tithes or make sacrifices. Without any conditions or strings attached, the moment you are born, God comes into you with the air that you breathe.

It is said that God is in every place. If the God of oneness is in every place, then wouldn’t the God of oneness also be inside your body? God is always with you, complete and perfect.

What feels the divine inside you is your spirit. When you feel your divinity within, that’s what enlightenment is. If you cannot feel your divinity within, then even if you have it, it’s like you don’t have it.

Because God is in all of us, we are all equal. Everyone is precious because we all have God inside our bodies. That’s what makes each person divine and sacred, and that’s why you deserve to receive respect. When you can feel your divinity, you have an awareness or consciousness that let’s you respect all other people.

Unfortunately, we are living in a world where people are losing their love and respect for one another. When people try to possess and own other people and control them, then that is not godly. You could say that those people have fallen or become corrupt.

A sense of the divine in everything can be found in all of the ancient traditions and cultures of humanity. But that kind of spirit and sense, through the development of modernity, has been lost in many cultures. It’s been overtaken by the artificial—everything has become so artificial and synthetic or processed. Through this development, we’ve grown more distant from the divine and the natural.

God was already there before manmade institutions such as religions and nations ever existed. The answer, then, to regaining your sense of the divinity inside you is not in manmade systems, or even in an enlightened teacher. Everything you need is already inside you. If you have a brain, then you’ve got it all. The answers are in your brain, beyond your preconceptions and learned knowledge. The brain was not made by human beings, but by God the creator; it’s also nature. I think of nature as God.

Return to the divine by returning to what is natural. God is in every breath you take. Breathe quietly with this awareness today and be enlightened to the divinity that is always with you.
