Chun Ee Sam Ji Ee Sam In Ee Sam

Heaven gains two to make three, Earth gains two to make three, Human gains two to make three

There is Heaven, Earth, and Human in everything the Chun Bu Kyung tells us. The next phrase gives further insight into the process of individuation and gathering described in the previous one. It says that Heaven gains Earth and Human, and becomes a triad of heavenly heaven, heavenly human and heavenly earth. The same happens to Earth and Human. These form nine different dimensions or categories of existence that range from earthly earth to heavenly heaven. That means that Earth and Humanity are within Heaven; Heaven and Humanity are both within Earth; and Heaven and Earth are within Humanity. Though they each seem separate, all are interconnected. This truth of oneness is repeated throughout the Chun Bu Kyung.

Seeing the greater picture of the universe allows us to take on a wider perspective. We can develop a loving detachment toward everything in our lives. We can remember that we are never really alone, and that we’re not just a compilation of cells.

When having trouble remembering this truth in the throes of daily existence, focus on the breath. When inhaling, give thanks to the body. When exhaling, give thanks to Heaven. The breath will automatically become deeper, lighter, and more natural. Focusing solely on the breath awakens us to the fact that our bodies are connected to the infinite and empty space.

  • Thank You Seuseung nim for explaining this so simply. I especially like the information of breathing in and giving thanks to the body, and breathing out give thanks to the Earth. I am going to practice this myself, and share this with our Dahn Yoga Center members.

  • Thank you so much for this simple yet profound guidance on the breath. I will remember to give thanks as I breathe rather then to just breathe. The two are very different! I know this will be a very powerful tool for my spiritual growth.
