Discover how embracing our uniquely human qualities will shape a more harmonious, resilient future that thrives alongside AI.
We are living in the age of artificial intelligence. The rise of generative AI, including tools like ChatGPT, has brought both unprecedented convenience and profound disruption. At the speed at which human beings have acquired knowledge and processed information, we have reached a point where we can no longer outperform machines.
This civilizational turning point reveals a deeper question: If machines can replicate human intelligence, what does it truly mean to be human? What essential abilities will we need moving forward?
A New Form of Intelligence
I believe the answer lies in Coexistence Intelligence—the capacity to live in harmony with others, with nature, and with the technologies we create. Years ago, I proposed a new vision of humanity that I termed Homo Coexistence. This new “species” consisted of human beings who thrive through cooperation rather than competition. Today, this vision feels more relevant than ever.
A sustainable future depends on choosing coexistence over rivalry. To address the changes AI brings to our world, the spirit of Homo Coexistence needs to evolve into a practical, lived capability—a Coexistence Intelligence.
The Need for a Paradigm Shift in Education
For decades, education has prioritized intellectual achievement above all else. While this approach has driven innovation and progress, it has often overlooked a fundamental aspect. Our sensitivity to life, our empathy, and our connection to one another have been secondary. However, knowledge alone does not make us fully human.
It is time for a shift in paradigm. The abilities AI cannot replicate—empathy, emotional awareness, compassion, and reverence for life—are precisely the qualities to cultivate. Recognizing that we are deeply interconnected, we can develop the intelligence needed to collaborate, create, and act for the greater good.
The Role of the Body in Awakening Intelligence
The key to awakening this intelligence is closer than we might think. It resides in the human body. Experiential, body-centered education helps restore the sensory awareness many of us have lost in an increasingly digital world. Brain Education, the human-centered approach I developed, is grounded in this philosophy, emphasizing physical movement, emotional balance, and self-reflection.
Through intentional physical activity, mindful breathing, and inward attention, we sharpen our brain’s sensitivity and strengthen our ability to regulate emotions. When people reconnect with their bodies, they become more open, resilient, and ready to engage with the world in meaningful ways.
I like to describe this approach as a return to the integration of “Body, Character, and Wisdom (Jungchoong, Kijang, Shinmyung).” First, we build vitality through a healthy body. On that foundation, we cultivate integrity and compassion. From there, knowledge becomes not just something we accumulate, but something we apply with clarity and purpose.
Coexistence Intelligence as a Solution
Coexistence Intelligence is not simply about becoming kinder individuals. It is a vital capacity for addressing the complex challenges facing humanity—from climate change and global conflict to inequality and social fragmentation. More importantly, it enables us to use AI as a tool for peace and shared prosperity rather than division.
Within every human being lies an innate desire to contribute to the greater good. Too often, however, chronic stress and relentless competition dull this instinct. When people rediscover their inner awareness and reclaim authorship over their own minds, a healthier and more balanced society becomes possible.
Rather than competing with artificial intelligence, we can learn to partner with it. We can use technology wisely while nurturing the uniquely human qualities that machines cannot replace. Those who embody Coexistence Intelligence will become the true leaders of the emerging era of Homo Coexistence.
A future characterized by technological advancement calls for a new kind of human maturity. Rather than defining success by conventional standards, we can laud the cultivation of individuals who understand their interconnectedness with the planet and all living beings—and who are prepared to lead with that awareness.
The age of AI is not the end of human potential. It is an invitation to expand it.
