Three and four form a circle, five with seven makes One whole
Everything in life is a cycle. This cycle is actually described in the Chun Bu Kyung with numbers, and we can see this cycle at many different levels of life. For example, one revolution of the planet Earth is divided into 4 seasons of 3 months each: winter, spring, summer, and fall. Each year also goes through one whole cycle of 12 months (5 + 7).

Cosmologically, the vertical order of the trinity of heaven earth and human will be sheltered spatially by the 4 corners, and elementally by the 4 elements of earth, wind, fire, and water, to form a field where fire and water energy come together to impart harmonious order to life.

In the human body, we have an energy circulation system made up of 3 internal energy centers and 4 external centers. These energy centers, which we call dahnjons in Korean, are similar to chakras, but not exactly. The numbers of the Chun Bu Kyung, however, do also refer to chakras. When the 5 elements Ilchi Lee - energy - 7 energy centersof ki energy (water, fire, earth, water, wood, metal) flow through the circuit created by these 7 energy centers, the energy mechanism of the human body becomes complete.

As the 3 internal energy centers develop or become stronger, we also develop our physical health, our emotional health, and our spiritual health. This development usually starts with the lower energy center in our lower abdomen, which strengthens the vital energy of our body and improves our physical condition. Next the middle energy center in the middle of our chest matures, which results in our heart opening and spontaneous love pouring forth from it. Our negativity is then washed away. Finally, the upper energy center in the center of our brain develops, which produces spiritual awakening and enlightenment.

The trinity of Heaven, Earth, and Human, or the spiritual, physical, and energetic, are integrated at this point. The Water Up Fire Down energy cycle in our bodies becomes balanced and healthy, and we are able to control the energy with our minds.

To get a small taste of this phenomenon for yourself, try this simple exercise. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and parallel to each other. Bend your knees slightly and relax your shoulders. Keep your spine straight from your tailbone to the top of your neck. In this posture, make loose fists and tap your lower abdomen two inches below your navel. This external point is associated with your internal lower energy center. Tap this point at least 100 times, but you can keep going if you like. Tap it until your head clears, your abdomen feels warm, and your feet feel heavy. Tap until any emotions you have feel like they’re floating away and you feel lighter. Now you’re experiencing Water Up Fire Down and the beginning of your physical, emotional, and spiritual development. You can even try doing this exercise every day, and sharing your experience in the Comments or on my Facebook page.

  • I have heard from some western medicine practitioners to “strengthen your core”. But now I know what it actually means! I really love this explanation of the human body–it is so complete. Thank you Seuseungnim!
